...IS AN AMAZING GAME. FO SRS. AND ITLL HAVE FANART. OH YEAH!
******THERE MIGHT BE SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD FOR PL AND THE DIABOLICAL BOX, REA DUNDER YOUR OWN RISK. THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION ON THE GAME, BUT I DEEPLY ENCOURAGE TO BUY IT YOURSELF TO FORM YOUR OWN OPINION ;D********
I bought it last Sunday and just today I finished it. I'm not ashamed to admit that the ending really tugged at my heartstrings and nearly cried. ;__; For me, it definately surpassed the first game, Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Even though both were amazingly good games, I felt the story of Diabolical Box was slightly more intricate, longer, engaging, slightly darker, and sentimental, which made it nothing short of amazing. (I love plotwists of any kind, big or small) Also, there was more variety to the puzzles in this game, and the Memo feature came exceedingly useful to me.
PROLOGUE
Our story begins with Layton and Luke receiving a letter from Dr. Shrader, Layton's friend and mentor.
In it, he details about a research he's been conducting on the acursed item, The Elysian Box, and his findings. The letter however, tipped Layton off that something might've gone wrong with the investigation and Layton opts to visit Dr. Shrader with his assistant and self-procclaimed apprentice, Luke.
Upon arrival to Dr. Shraders flat, Layton and Luke find him laying dead on the floor. Layton then finds a ticket for the Molentary Express with seemingly no destination on it in Dr. Shrader's office. Inspector Chelmey then arrives to the scene and proclaims murder, at the same time urging Layton to 'stop doing his job' as an investigator as Layton tries to share his hypothesis and findings.
Keeping the ticket secret from Chelmey, Layton and Luke proceed to take the Molentary Express in search for answers on the cursed Elysian Box that killed Layton's dear friend, Shrader, and the place to which he had travelled before his death. In this trip, is when the true adventure begins...

Whoever played the first game knows what they're getting into, the formula is pretty much the same, but with a whole new story, new puzzles, and a new grand mystery to solve. For those who don't, the Professor Layton games' formula works on a story that progresses as you answer mind-churning puzzles and riddles.
You follow Layton and Luke (and Flora) as they board the Molentary Express and head to the beginning of the adventure and it's core. As they advance, they meet with lush, varied, and lovable characters that drop puzzles on you, either because it's been bothering them for a while, or in exchange for information.
Other things that were added on the side as sidequests, was the Hamster Game, The Camera, The Tea Set, and the Old Diary. The Hamster comes to serve the same purpose the robotic dog in the first game did, and the tea set is a fun, little sidequest where you gather ingredients to prepare new teas and make someone else happy. The Camera is another little sidegame where you take pictures of certain locations and then proceed to find the differences between the real location and a '

hoto', aka, you have to find 3 mayor differences. The old diary is another plot point, it's a diary which pages reveal to you as you progress to the story and get keys to open more pages.
The story is heartfelt and even though it becomes slightly predictable as you advance, it's still engaging on it's own right. The characters in the story are very varied in personalities and they're fun to 'chat' with. The main character of this game, personally, was one of my favorites. I really liked the simplistic design and personality they gave him, and his story was... well I won't spoil you ;D.
The animation follows up the quality of the first installment and is fantastic. There's a few more CGI in it for the Train but in its core it's all traditional animation. It's fluid, dynamic, and fun to watch. Voice acting was amazing, and even though at the beginning Anton's voice took me aback, at the end I understood why they gave him that voice.
The music choice was also beautiful and really sets the mood in the different parts of the game you arrive in. The main theme "Iris" by Ryoki Matsumoto is a beautifully composed piece that becomes the main theme of the whole game at the end and really carries the core message of the game in its tune.

So as to not spoil you anymore, I say it's a game REALLY worth buying if you're into puzzle games. If you're not (like me) I still recommend it if you like a good story. I'm not big with puzzle games because i'm not that good at them, but Layton's puzzles are really interesting, entertaining, and interactive. Believe me, they make you addicted at some point haha. If you're too action oriented, or RPG, then it's not the game for you.
In it's core, Layton is a PUZZLE GAME with a compelling story that gives sense to the puzzles, which appear as you progress and they drive the plot further. The character design seems wierd sometimes in construction but it's always interesting to see a different art style other than anime in videogames and their variety in shapes and forms the characters take is impressive. The voice acting, most especially LAyton's in my case, is simply ear-candy.
So yeah, if you are willing to give a puzzle game a chance, Layton is the one I recommend c:
Im not good at reviews, but here's mine.
Overall, I give this game an 9.7 in a 9-10 scale. c:
SO WHEN'S THE NEXT GAME OUT???
